Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens of Illinois have achieved historic rights with enactment of the state’s nondiscrimination bill (SB3186). Illinois is fourteenth among twenty states to provide protection for equal rights for LGBT individuals. The new law bans discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations and credit transactions based solely on sexual orientation.
This and other milestone legislation spearheaded by Equality Illinois—including the prior passage of nondiscrimination statutes in Cook County, Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington, Normal and Peoria—were achieved with the generous support of Equality Illinois members.

In many ways the passage of SB3186 is as much a new beginning as it is a culmination of the long effort to secure nondiscrimination protection throughout the state. We need your help now more than ever to build on this historic victory and continue our work to guarantee equitable legal protection for LGBT Illinoisans.
We need your help to defend against backlash initiatives aimed at rescinding or restricting the nondiscrimination bill and to oppose other anti-gay legislation, such as anti-gay adoption bills or constitutional bans on same-sex marriage, which may be introduced into the Illinois General Assembly.
Now, as we focus on the future, we need your support to pass legislation protecting the rights of LGBT individuals by providing safe schools, partner hospital visitation and inheritance rights, bereavement leave and other basic equalities by other citizens across Illinois.
